Need vs. Think You Need

I recently went to The Container Store with a friend who was moving. She needed organization stuff for the closets of the new apartment.
I noticed while there they have many products that do the same thing but just shaped differently. How many ways can you dust something? I mean how many things do you need to dust something.
Okay, we all know marketing a product is important and that the more products you have the more money you make. The question is how many things do we really need to do the same task? I'm not going into it right now but I think about this all the time. If we are simultaneously trying to reduce landfill contributions and be "green" AND trying desperately to market goods that are really not needed how do we not come off as hypocritical or at least confusing?

Choice is good.
